Featured Fly Tyer of the Month

Rob Nicholas

Rob will be incorporating his Featured Fly Tying Program with his guest speaker program entitled, “Fly Fishing the Housatonic and Farmington Rivers in Connecticut”.  Rob is a full time guide on the Housatonic and Farmington rivers and has been operating Housatonic Anglers Guide Service since 1993. In addition to guiding, Rob runs a booking agency called Angling in the Andes which focuses on the best areas to fish in both Argentina and Chile. For further information, have a look at his websites,  www.anglingintheandes.com and www.housatonicanglers.com  He will be tying some of his "go to" flies for the Housatonic and Farmington. Some of the flies he will be tying are the Sparkle Duns, Caddis Emerger, Beetles (both foam and w/deer hair) and with time permitting, his version of a Zonker. All of these flies are effective wherever trout can be found.

Come early and watch Rob's entire Feature Fly Tying Program!

I would like to thank Paul Dolbec for being February's Featured Fly (Knot) Tyer. Paul did an excellent job on explaining and showing us what knots to use, when to use them and how to properly tie each knot. He showed us the commonly used knots that are used in everyday fishing. Paul was also kind enough to send me a list of books and websites that he had found most useful in remembering how to tie the knots that he instructed us on. Please refer to the following books and websites.

Books:

1)     Practical Fishing Knots; Mark Sosin & Lefty Kreh

2)     Pocket Guide to Fly Fishing Knots; Cordes & LaFontain

3)     Fly Knot6

4)     Fishing Knots; Lefty Kreh

The Fly Tying Program is an important part of the meetings for all who fly fish. The program presents different fly patterns that have been tried, as well as flies that work well throughout the region (some even worldwide). Please take the time to watch the monthly tyer work and learn the hot flies of the month.

We have a video system that allows us to project the tying on the Big Screen, so you can really see the process up close.  It makes for a very good learning experience as you can see the tyer’s hands and motions in detail.

The doors open around 6:00pm. Tying starts at 6:30pm. Come early and make sure you see the whole Featured Fly Tying Program.

May your lines always be tight.
