Ernest Schwiebert Chapter of Trout Unlimited
Monthly Meeting Announcement
The next meeting of the Ernest Schwiebert Chapter of Trout
Unlimited will take place on Monday evening, March 10, 2008, at the
Pennington Fire House on Bromel Place in Pennington,
NJ. The meeting will begin with a fly tying
demonstration at
6:30 PM, followed by a featured presentation by this month’s guest
speaker. Doors open at 6:00 PM.
March’s featured speaker will be Aaron Jasper from the
website; Troutpredator.com who will present a program
entitled “Catskills Alternatives.” Aaron’s program will focus
on fishing opportunities in the state of Connecticut. Aaron
is a skilled guide and fly fisherman who believes that most
fishermen from NJ have no idea of the opportunities that
Connecticut has to offer.
Aaron will focus on the two main watersheds there, the
Housatonic and the Farmington, and how to catch the trophies those
rivers contain. These two rivers produce many fish in the 20" class on a
yearly basis and Aaron knows how to catch them. One look at the pictures
on his website, Troutpredator.com, should be enough to convince
you.
Aaron will also tie a couple of his most productive flies.
They are a Sulpher Nymph and a Hendrickson Emerger using
snowshoe rabbit's feet. Both patterns are easy to tie and are major
producers of trout. Please plan on joining us for what should be an
informative presentation.
The Ernest Schwiebert Chapter of Trout Unlimited meets on
the second Monday of each month (excluding July and August) at The
Pennington Fire House located at Bromel Place in Pennington NJ. Please
park in the rear of the firehouse and enter through the back entrance.

Virus Infects Connetquot River State Park Trout at Hatchery
--------------------
BY Bill Bleyer
Newsday Staff Writer
A virus has been found in trout at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve
hatchery, and officials are weighing options for combating it, including killing
more than 25,000 fish.
The disease, infectious pancreatic necrosis, poses no known hazard to humans who
handle or consume the fish. But it can cause extensive mortality in young trout,
according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The agency said the virus was found in brook, brown and rainbow trout in
November when they were sent to a DEC lab upstate as part of an inspection
program conducted at state-owned and private hatcheries that raise fish to be
released into state waters.
The virus, which has spread in recent years as more salmon and other fish
species are grown in hatcheries and on farms, can be transmitted from infected
to uninfected fish and from parents to their offspring. There is no cure and DEC
regulations prohibit stocking diseased fish in any state waters.
Asked whether the trout will be killed, DEC spokeswoman Maureen Wren said "that
definitely has not been decided yet." She said her agency and the state parks
department will be meeting to discuss other options in a few weeks.
The DEC said the disease can turn fry a blackish color and cause hemorrhages or
exophthalmia, also known as "popeye," in fingerlings.
When it infects hatchery fish, it can affect that population for some time, then
go dormant for years before re-emerging. Although the hatchery fish do not
always display symptoms, they have the potential of infecting wild species when
introduced into a body of water, potentially causing large kills.
Park manager Gilbert Bergen said, "We probably have25- or 30,000 trout right
now, not counting the little fry." The infected fish are 5 to 6 inches long. The
rainbow trout are inside the hatchery while brook and brown trout are in
surrounding ponds.
The Connetquot hatchery stocks not only the Connetquot River but other parks:
the Nisseqogue River in Caleb SmithState Park as well as Belmont Lake and
Hempstead Lake. "But everything now is on hold," Bergen said.
Whatever is decided, there will be no immediate impact on recreational fishing.
"We have opened our fishing season, and there are fish in the water," Bergen
said.
But if all the trout are killed, "that would change the picture completely," he
said. "There would be a gap of a few years until you don't have a positive
reading [for the virus], and the fishing would not be quite as good as it used
to be."
For now, Bergen said, "We're continuing to feed the fish," which appear
perfectly healthy. "You can't see anything," he said, and there has been no
increase in mortality. "Many of them are immune to this disease or have
developed a resistance to it."

Stream School
March 21 and 22
Hours 9-4
South Branch Watershed Association
Flemington, NJ. For more details please visit our website.
http://www.nj.gov/dep/watershedmgt/
The NJ Watershed Watch Network in conjunction with South Branch Watershed
Association is hosting our Annual Stream School Training. This training is open
to the public.
Stream School is a two-day training focusing on macroinvertebrate identification
and NJ's data analysis process. This course will help you better understand the
connections between the macro community living in streams and what they indicate
about the health of the stream.
The Stroud Center's staff is
internationally acclaimed for its pioneering research on streams and rivers. The
scientists work in interdisciplinary research teams, blending their individual
talents in chemistry, microbial ecology, invertebrate biology, watershed
ecology, and ecosystem modeling to study the physical, chemical, and biological
processes of streams and rivers, the life histories of individual organisms, and
the ecology of watersheds.
The course is designed for participants to brush up on their identification
skills or take their skills one-step further.
